Proposing for a loacal Kaw Wai's FM radio in Burma/Myanmar

Overview

Kaw Wai is a local FM radio broadcast station that is situated in inside Karen State, Burma/Myanmar. It was established in 20th May, 2007. It has been running for two years. From 20th May, 2007 till 31st January, 2008, it was supported by Labor Union from Netherland for the basic needs. After that it still could be run by a local Karen organization's support for three months. Sadly, Kaw Wai have to suspend since 30th May, 2008 because of no basic financial support is available for it's project.

It is a remote and rural area. Except radio, there is no option such as e-mail, internet and newspaper can reach to people who live in this areas. The people who live there are working on farms, working on plantations and feeding domestic animals for their income. see map…

We have 9 people who work for Kaw Wai FM radio. The office is base on Thai-Burma border, and the radio station is base on a high mountain in Burma.        

Aim

To promote these local people to gain knowledge and understanding in social, political, environmental and economic through Kaw Wai FM radio.

Kaw Wai have been broadcasting for 3 days per week on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The times that it has been broadcasting at 08:00-08:30 and 18:00-19:00 (Myanmar time). Kaw wai have 9 staff, 6 male and 3 female, who have been working for this FM radio program.

Feedbacks

Kaw Wai have received feedback from 300 listeners. After this FM radio could not continue, the listeners were very sad. Many listeners gave feedbacks that the FM radio is essential for them. They have learnt more about agricultural knowledges, trade unions and human rights, health care, some of national and international news, and getting to hear music so on through this FM radio program.
